Policy Benchmark Commentary

The Endowment’s benchmark comprises five indices representing each of the asset classes of the portfolio. The weight of each index within the benchmark corresponds with the target allocation per the Investment Policy Statement. With the guidance and approval of the Subcommittee on Investments the benchmark construction and asset allocation are reviewed on an annual basis.

Total endowment market value (in millions)

Georgetown has a modest endowment compared to its academic peers, but the endowment’s market value has more than tripled since 2010, despite a volatile global economy, while generating $1 billion to support the university’s mission.

10-year cumulative return

Managed since 2005 by the university’s Chief Investment Officer and a professional staff, and guided by the Board of Directors’ Investment Subcommittee, Georgetown’s endowment reached an all-time high at the end of Fiscal Year 2023.

FY23 total endowment activity

Philanthropic support is crucial to the growth of Georgetown’s endowment and plays an important role in the university’s ability to achieve its mission. In Fiscal Year 2023, the total endowment received $88 million in gifts from donors. The endowment spending rate in Fiscal Year 2023 was 4.6 percent, excluding internal investment management fees and other transfers from the pooled endowment.
