Amid a turbulent year, the Georgetown donor community acted with compassion and generosity, funding programs that support access and affordability, racial justice, health care, international cooperation, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n

Paying it forward<\/h3>\n

Georgetown\u2019s 45th president, Robert J. Henle, S.J., led the university from 1969 to 1976, a particularly tumultuous period in American history that saw major change nationwide and at Georgetown. A Jesuit priest and classical scholar, he took to heart Georgetown\u2019s philosophy of \u201ccontemplation in action\u201d and mission to serve as \u201cpeople for others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inspired by this pivotal campus leader, David (L\u201988) and Heidi Jacquin made a $10M gift to create the Robert J. Henle, S.J. Scholarship for undergraduate students.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took a chance on me when I was an undergraduate and put me on the path to Georgetown. I\u2019ll never forget that,\u201d recalls Jacquin, whose first time on a plane was when he visited the Hilltop. \u201cThere\u2019s something magical about the campus\u2013I still feel that today when I return.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wife, Heidi, adds, \u201cWe give to Georgetown so that more students like David can spread their wings. When the universe gives you something tremendous, you pay it forward. Doing that creates more goodness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preparing the next generation of allies and leaders<\/h3>\n

A recent gift from the Behrens family will establish a new position in the Department of Athletics: the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will focus on matters related to social justice, specifically the training and education of student-athletes, coaches, and staff members.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family and I are honored to assist the Athletics Department in creating this important new position,\u201d says former student-athlete Mary Taylor Behrens (C\u201983). \u201cWe hope the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Athletics will serve as a voice and mentor for the Black student-athletes to feel more welcome and accepted on campus, as well as among their teammates. Additionally, the new position will help educate all student-athletes, coaches, and staff on how to be better allies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behrens was a member of the track team during her time on the Hilltop, is a Regent Emeritus, and serves as the head of the Regent\u2019s Athletics Committee. Her son Matt (C\u201918, L\u201922) played lacrosse and was a Patrick Healy Fellow, and her son Chris (C\u201916) also attended Georgetown.<\/p>\n

A partner for the Americas<\/h3>\n

Longtime Georgetown supporters Rolando (C\u201968) and Monica Gonzalez-Bunster (Parents\u201900,\u201905,\u201914,\u201916) have committed $25 million to establish the Americas Institute at Georgetown University, creating a cross-disciplinary platform for the university\u2019s work on Latin America and the hemisphere.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the prime learning institution in the nation\u2019s capital and one of the leading universities in the United States, Georgetown is positioned to be a center of influence, thought, and innovation for the Americas and the rest of the world,\u201d says Rolando Gonzalez-Bunster. \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer that Georgetown can always make positive changes because of those who run it, teach in it, and attend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facilitating summer internships, even in a pandemic<\/h3>\n

A newly expanded summer program at Georgetown University provides first-generation and low-income undergraduates with financial and programmatic support as they participate in summer internships. This past summer\u2019s session was adapted to ensure everyone\u2019s safety during the ongoing health crisis, with students living around the world\u2014rather than only in Washington, D.C.\u2014and participating in remote internships.<\/p>\n

The Idol Family Fellowship Program was made possible by a $5 million gift from the Idol Family Foundation. John Idol, father of Christina (C\u201914), is a former member of the Board of Directors, Board of Regents, and College Board of Advisors.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family believes that education and access to professional development opportunities that serve as a training ground for future employment will help create advantages for first-generation students at Georgetown,\u201d shares Idol.<\/p>\n
